The issue should be of interest both to newcomers to the field, as well as to more senior researchers, with a general introduction to the theoretical approaches of the field (Asprem), and subjects ranging from the 19th century Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn (Edland), via Aleister Crowley (Winje) and the German völkisch movement and anthroposophy (Emberland), to the more recent Order of Odd Fellows (Rostad) and the New Age oriented Share International (Kolstø).&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The issue can be ordered here: http://www.mamut.net/novus/shop/&lt;br /&gt;(Click on “3 Tidsskrifter / Journals” in the sidebar to the left, and Din will appear.)&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The journal is in Norwegian.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Abstracts:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Egil Asprem: “På epleslang i kunnskapens tre: en kritisk drøfting av teori i nyere esoterismeforskning.”&lt;br /&gt;The academic study of Western esotericism has gone through a process of professionalization during the last two decades. Access to new institutional platforms has given more room for debates and theoretical reflections on the foundations of research on esotericism. This article deals critically with recent discussions on the definition and theorisation of “esotericism” and its place within the broader disciplinary frameworks of religious studies and the history of ideas. It argues that the recent debate has brought the field to a paradoxical position where the scope of the term “esotericism” is mostly agreed upon, while the theoretical justification for the usage remains contested. It is also argued that much of the disagreement is due to three different strategies taken by scholars in order to approach the subject matter; historical, typological, and discursive. This article extracts valuable points from the different perspectives in order to single out some commonalities despite the differences. I will subsequently suggest new directions for esotericism research by emphasizing a closer allegiance with the critical approaches within religious studies and the sociologically oriented history of ideas.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Janemil Kolstø †: “‘Ingen avstand mellom oss.’ En beskrivelse av Share International som esoterisk diskurs.”&lt;br /&gt;In this article, Share International is presented as an esoteric discourse linked to Antoine Faivre’s essentialist notions of esotericism which usefulness in recent debates has been contested. Based on Faivre’s characteristics and a structural discourse analysis of the communication between Share International’s inspirer Benjamin Creme and individuals interested in his message, Share International is defined as a “group” partaking in an esoteric discourse in line with other New Age organizations.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Terje Emberland: “Antroposofi, völkisch-tenkning og nazisme – ideologisk naboskap og rivalisering i det kultiske miljø.”&lt;br /&gt;The anthroposophical movement that grew out of a political and religious sub-culture in late-19th-century Germany is characterised by anti-rationalism, occult racial theories, the cult of the “Germanic” past, illuminated politics, and utopian social experiments. These impetuses gave the teaching of Rudolf Steiner its distinctive character. The same sub-culture was also a source of inspiration to the early national socialist movement. The documented contacts between anthroposophy and National Socialism in these early days do, however, only imply a general ideological family likeness, stemming from a shared cultural climate. This family resemblance can be explained by the concept of “the cultic milieu”, developed by the sociologist Colin Campbell: According to this concept, anthroposophy, political and religious völkisch groups, as well as early National Socialism, can be seen as part of the same cultic milieu, whose shared structures and channels of communication facilitated the exchange of people and ideas between the different groups.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Aslak Rostad: “Vennskap, kjærlighet og sannhet. Esoterisme i Odd Fellow Ordenen.”&lt;br /&gt;Bilag: “Lukkede ordensselskaper i Norge”&lt;br /&gt; “‘Friendship, Love and Truth’ Esotericism in the Norwegian Order of Odd Fellows.” This article seeks to uncover the motives for why the largest fraternal organisation in Norway, The Order of Odd Fellows, keeps its rituals secret by analysing the order’s membership publications. Following Hugh Urban’s postulate that 18th-century esoteric societies gave members of the aristocracy opportunity to step out of a changing society and maintain their traditional values, this article claims that a modern fraternal organisation such as the Odd Fellows fills some of the same functions but now represents middle-class values. The Odd Fellows’s membership publications show that the order understands itself in opposition to a morally decaying society marked by materialism and egoism, while the order is regarded as a guardian of the same society’s true core values, in terms of traditions, absolute moral commands, clear power structures etc. The order therefore creates a distance to the society and allows its members to step out of it, while at the same time making them society’s moral elite. The article concludes that secrecy surrounding the rituals is on the one hand a means to keep the society at a distance, and on the other to create the idea that initiated members have a deeper insight into central values of the Norwegian society than outsiders.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Geir Winje: “Aleister Crowley – en vestlig tantriker?”&lt;br /&gt;This article discusses why some scholars and biographers insist on viewing Aleister Crowley as an occultist who built a bridge between Eastern tantrism and Western esotericism. After presenting the main elements of Hindu and Buddhist tantra, the article considers The Confessions of Aleister Crowley. This work is no ordinary autobiography, but an autohagiography; a text that instead of trying to tell the truth constructs an image of the author as a man corresponding to his own ideals. These ideals seem to be inspired by a number of sources; occult traditions, a variety of religions, modernity, art and nature. Tantrism is not mentioned in The Confessions, but may give meaning to some aspects of Crowley’s life. The main element seems in this case to be sexual magic. However, a closer look at the practices behind this notion suggests Western origins, disguised as Tantric in an orientalistic sense.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Vidar Edland: “Egyptiske låneelementer i The Hermetic Order of Golden Dawns rituallære.”&lt;br /&gt;The title of this article translates as “Egyptian Elements in the ritual corpus of the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn.” The article starts out by discussing the cultural context of the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, followed by a short presentation of the order and the role of Ancient Egyptian religion in the naming of the order and its temples. Then, the article analyzes occurrences of Egyptian references in the order’s founding text, The Cipher Manuscripts, before surveying the larger, and more magical-oriented corpus of teachings and practices that was introduced to the order in 1892. If you are a Pagan we would appreciate your taking the time to complete this survey.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;This survey builds on an earlier one completed over twenty years ago, primarily in the United States, which was conducted by Helen A. Berger and Andras Arthen (of the EarthSpirit Community) entitled the Pagan Census. At the time it was hoped that we could do a census of the entire Pagan population. Although that was not possible the data that was collected was the largest of it type and served as the basis of a book, Voices from the Pagan Census by Helen A. Berger (with Evan Leach and Leigh S. Shaffer). The survey data is now available on line at Murray Research Archive at Harvard University.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;A number of scholars have noted that it would be helpful to have a follow-up of that survey to see if and how the community has changed or remained the same. The survey that follows uses many, although not all of the same questions that were in the original survey to provide that comparison. There are also new questions, for instance about the Internet, something that was of little interest 20 years ago but is now, and some from other studies, that again permit a comparison. This has resulted in the survey being somewhat long--we appreciate your taking the time to complete it.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;We realize that the categories found in questionnaires like this one frequently do not do justice to the complexities of real life. For this reason, a number of open-ended items have been included that allow for more nuanced responses. You are also welcome to contact Helen A. We welcome papers on all aspects of Satanism, but the conference focus will be on Satanism as a practised religion or life-style, and to some extent on Satanism in culture and the arts, rather than on issues such as Satanic Ritual Abuse or Mass Media constructions of Satanism. Proposals for presentations are welcomed from postgraduates within all relevant academic disciplines. Följande beskrivning är från baksidestexten:&lt;br /&gt;  &lt;br /&gt;Intresset för vikingatiden och de fornnordiska gudarna är stort i dagens Sverige och utgör en central del av den nationella självförståelsen. Varje sommar hålls vikingamarknader på flera platser i landet och i många butiker säljs smycken med fornnordiska motiv. De flesta ser det som en historisk epok som inte omedelbart påverkar deras liv idag. Men för vissa blir &lt;br /&gt;intresset för vikingatiden och dess gudar vägen till en ny livsåskådning. &lt;br /&gt;  &lt;br /&gt;I den här studien behandlas modern asatro och dess strävan att konstruera en etnisk och religiös identitet. Den moderna asatron är en paradoxal religion. Den baserar sig på äldre religiösa föreställningar och sätter sig genom sin syn på kulturell och etnisk identitet i opposition till det moderna urbana samhället. På ett liknande sätt framhåller de asatroende sig som en &lt;br /&gt;minoritet men utgår från etniska föreställningar som delas av en majoritet som inte har något intresse för asatron. Den moderna asatron är inte skild från bredare föreställningar om fornnordisk kultur; snarare har den dragit dessa till sin spets. Det handlar om ett sökande efter något som kan fungera som en fast punkt i en tid som upplevs som allt mer föränderlig och där rådande strukturer saknar varaktighet. Historien blir inom asatron en väg mot något permanent, en symbol för något som den moderna människan har förlorat. Men tolkningen av det förflutna ligger inte fast. Historien omvandlas ständigt för att passa samtida behov och värderingar. Inemot 300 av dem är alkemiska texter. Kristina tog på flera sätt till sig alkemins föreställningsvärld om hur manliga och kvinnliga kvaliteter möts i sammansmältningar. Jag påvisar att Kristina i Stockholm läste nyplatonska författare , särskilt Iamblichus’ De mysteriis aegyptiorum. Hon intresserade sig för Pythagoras och hon lusläste allt vad renässansfilosofen Giovanni Pico della Mirandola skrivit. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Jag avser att publicera boken som &lt;em&gt;Fenixelden: Drottning Kristina och de hermetiska böckerna&lt;/em&gt; (238 s, ill.)&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Tidigare har jag publicerat en analys av Kristinas fria tänkande i religiösa frågor, &lt;em&gt;Queen Christina and her Circle: The Transformation of a Philosophical Libertine&lt;/em&gt;. Brill. Leiden, 1991. Detta var min avhandling i filosofihistoria vid Washington University in S:t Louis, 1988. Boken har väckt en hel del uppmärksamhet eftersom jag gått igenom ett stort oanvänt material från flera europeiska bibliotek, liksom från Vatikanbiblioteket.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;För att bredda bilden har jag också utrett historien om Rosenkorsets brödraskap med utgångspunkt i den svenske runmagikern Johannes Bureus’ svar till rosenkorsarna: Fama e Scanzia Redux (1616). Jag tar upp de kosmologiska, profetiska och astrologiska tankegångar som frodades i dessa grupperingar. Seksjonen ”History of Hermetic Philosophy and Related Currents”, ledet av professor Wouter J. Hanegraaff, ligger formelt under det religionsvitenskapelige institutt, men ettersom det drives med eksterne midler har man lyktes å oppretholde et i stor grad selvstendig studieprogram i en periode preget av økonomiske nedskjæringer.&lt;br /&gt; &lt;br /&gt;Studieprogrammet tiltrekker seg et stadig voksende antall studenter fra en rekke land i Europa, samt USA og Canada. Selv om skandinaviske forskermiljøer later til å ha utviklet større interesse for ulike aspekter knyttet til esoterismeforskningen i senere år har antall skandinaviske studenter i Amsterdam vært moderat. Over de to siste kullene har det kun vært tre personer: to studenter fra Danmark, samt meg selv som avlegger mastergrad i Amsterdam denne sommeren. (I tillegg skal det nevnes at Kennet Granholm har vært engasjert som besøkende forsker i perioden 2007/2008). I det følgende vil jeg gi et kortfattet innblikk i aktiviteten og studieopplegget i Amsterdam for interesserte skandinaviske lesere. Kanskje vil dette øke interessen for fremtidige studenter.&lt;br /&gt; &lt;br /&gt;Hvert studieår avholdes ulike kurs på både bachelor- og masternivå. Bachelorkursene holdes på nederlandsk, og sikter mot å gi en generell innføring i esoterismens historie. Kurset er inndelt i moduler som fokuserer på ulike perioder, fra antikken til middelalderen, renessansen og den tidligmoderne periode, til okkultisme i det 19. og 20. århundre. Masterkurset har til motsetning en utpreget internasjonal profil. Her foregår all undervisning på engelsk, og studentmassen består i stor grad av utenlandsstudenter.&lt;br /&gt; &lt;br /&gt;Det faglige innholdet i masterprogrammet varierer noe fra år til år. Temaet for de ulike modulene reflekterer gjerne forskningsinteresser senteret til en hver tid er interessert i, og undervisningen foregår for det meste i seminarer hvor studenter forventes å delta aktivt. Også her er det en viss historisk ballanse, som er gjenspeilet i ansvarsområdene til de tre ansatte ved seksjonen: førsteamanuensene Dr. Kocku von Stuckrad og Dr. Marco Pasi er spesialister i henholdsvis tidligmoderne esoterisme og moderne okkultisme. Professor Hanegraaff er mer av en akademisk &lt;em&gt;sweeper&lt;/em&gt;, og gir gjerne kurs som spenner fra senantikkens nyplatonisme og hermetisme til New Age channelling. Kursene de tre underviser gjenspeiler disse spesialiseringene.&lt;br /&gt; &lt;br /&gt;Noen eksempler på kurs som er blitt avholdt de siste to årene kan være av interesse. Høsten 2006 gav Kocku von Stuckrad kurset ”Renaissance Esotericism” som dette semesteret tok for seg jødisk og kristen kabbalah. Kurset fokuserte særlig på interkonfesjonelle møter mellom kristne og jøder i Europa i senmiddelalderen og renessansen, og presenterte interessante kontekstualiseringer og teoretiske perspektiver på utviklingen av en kristen kabbalah fra Pico della Mirandola, via Reuchlin til moderne tid. Samme semester holdt Wouter Hanegraaff kurset ”Contested Knowledge”, som omhandlet begrepet ”Altered States of Consciousness” (ASC) i studiet av esoterisme. Kurset var i så måte ambisiøst i sitt forsøk på å undersøke hvordan/hvorvidt konseptet ASC kan berike studiefeltet. Forsøket ble gjort gjennom et fokus på finlesninger av originale tekster, fra Platon, &lt;em&gt;Corpus Hermeticum&lt;/em&gt; og Iamblichus, via benandanti og hekseprosesser i senmiddeladeren, til kristen teosofi, Swedenborg, 1800-talls spiritisme, moderne okkultisme og ritualmagi, og 60- og 70-tallets psykedelia. Temaer som gjentok seg var muligheter og problemer med å lese inn psykoaktive stoffer, abnormal psykologi og lignende i esoteriske tekster med opplevelsesorientert språk.&lt;br /&gt; &lt;br /&gt;Våren 2007 og våren 2008 holdt Marco Pasi kurset ”Occult Trajectories”. I 2007 var temaet esoterisme og politikk, med vekt på alle de svært ulike politiske kontekstene og konstellasjonene esoterisme har inngått i. Kurset viste for eksempel til de diametralt motsatte politiske interessene mellom Adam Weishaupts bayerske Illuminati og den tyske &lt;em&gt;Orden der Gold- und Rosenkreuzer&lt;/em&gt; i kontekst av Opplysningstiden og anti-Opplysningsbevegelsen. Derfra var kurset innom okkult Bonapartisme, progressiv utopisk spiritisme, og sosialistisk teosofi, samt &lt;em&gt;völkisch&lt;/em&gt;-okkultisme, nazi-okkultisme, radikalkonservativ tradisjonalisme, Aleister Crowleys politiske opportunisme, og til slutt feministiske hekser, nyhedenske naturvernere og rasistiske ”wolf-age pagans”. I 2008 var fokuset skiftet fra politikk til litteratur, og studentene fikk anledning til å lese romaner med esoterisk innhold fra Edward Bulwer-Lyttons rosenkorsmysterier via horrorforfatterne Arthur Machen og H.P. Lovecraft, til Umberto Ecos mesterlige satire, &lt;em&gt;Foucaults Pendel&lt;/em&gt;.&lt;br /&gt; &lt;br /&gt;Som dette utvalget av smakebiter gir inntrykk av er det et sterkt fokus på bred oversikt, lesning av primærkilder og akkumulering av faktakunnskap. Det teoretiske fokuset er noe nedtonet – kanskje mer enn det burde. Mangel på teoretisk stoff er kanskje spesielt uheldig tatt i betraktning de mange utfordringene dette unge feltet har vist seg å by på nettopp når det gjelder teori, definisjon og metode. Unntaket fra denne tendensen er imidlertid Kocku von Stuckrad, som i større grad forsøker å gi et innblikk i teoretisk problematikk og å oppdatere studentene om faglige diskusjoner som angår studiefeltet.&lt;br /&gt; &lt;br /&gt;Den store fordelen med å studere esoterisme i Amsterdam er det nære forholdet man får til den ledende forskningen på feltet. Professorene forsøker så langt tiden tillater det å jobbe tett med studentene; i tillegg til kurs som de nevnt over arrangeres det også ”tutorials” hvor studenten arbeider med selvvalgt emne og pensum, med tett oppfølging fra en av de tre ansatte. Dette gir en unik sjanse til spesialisering og oppfølging fra veiledere med topp kompetanse. I tillegg er seksjonen i Amsterdam tett knyttet til andre viktige institusjoner i studiet av esoterisme, inkludert fagtidsskriftet &lt;em&gt;Aries&lt;/em&gt; og organisasjonen ESSWE (&lt;a href="http://www.esswe.org/"&gt;www.esswe.org&lt;/a&gt;, &lt;a href="http://www.esswe.blogspot.com/"&gt;www.esswe.blogspot.com&lt;/a&gt;). Studenter blir gjerne oppfordret til å forsøke seg på vitenskapelig produksjon gjennom å sende inn artikler til &lt;em&gt;review&lt;/em&gt; eller delta på konferanser. Sammen med vektleggingen av seminarer og gjevnlige fremlegg av studenter i undervisningen gir dette uvurderlig profesjonell trening.&lt;br /&gt; &lt;br /&gt;Programmet og studentene det tiltrekker seg holder gjevnt over meget høyt nivå. Blant studentene på mitt kull har en anselig mengde allerede lyktes i å skaffe doktorgradsstillinger ulike steder i verden, blant annet ved prestisjetunge institusjoner som Cambridge, Oxford og Stanford, og i så ulike fag som historie, religionsvitenskap, sosialantropologi, klassisk filologi, og filosofi.&lt;br /&gt; &lt;br /&gt;Det kan også nevnes at senteret selv forvalter to doktorgradsstillinger, som ideelt skal spesialiseres i retning av tidligmoderne og senmoderne esoterisme. For tiden er begge stillinger besatt, av henholdsvis Osvald Vasicek og Tessel Bauduin. I tillegg er det åpent for å foreta doktorgradsstudier med eksterne midler. Fra høsten av vil to nye kandidater påbegynne sin forskning på denne måten: Joyce Pijnenburg, finansiert av en annen viktig institusjon for studiet av esoterisme i Amsterdam, &lt;em&gt;Bibliotheca Philosophica Hermetica&lt;/em&gt; ( &lt;a href="http://www.ritmanlibrary.nl/"&gt;www.ritmanlibrary.nl&lt;/a&gt;), og undertegnede, med midler fra Den Nederlandske Organisasjon for Vitenskapelig Forskning, NWO (&lt;a href="http://www.nwo.nl/"&gt;www.nwo.nl&lt;/a&gt;).&lt;br /&gt; Artiklarna kan utgå från olika ämnesperspektiv, till exempel religionsvetenskap, psykologi, sociologi, historia, idéhistoria eller statsvetenskap. Tidskriftens tonvikt ligger på det forskningsfält som utkristalliserats de senaste decennierna och som berör nyreligiösa fenomen som framträtt i västvärlden efter 1900-talets mitt. AURA vill dock också öppna för en vidare förståelse och problematisering av begreppet nyreligiositet, och ser också gärna bidrag som handlar exempelvis om nyreligiositet historiskt sett, om nyreligiositet i andra kulturella kontexter, samt om nya religiösa uttryck inom mainstream-religioner. AURA avser att främst vara en internordisk tidskrift, med fokus på nordisk forskning och i första hand med skandinaviska språk (svenska, danska, norska). It refers to the way people outside of the established religions and religious movements handle existential and spiritual issues. They do not choose ‘ready-made’ solutions, but in true eclectic spirit themselves decide what they want to believe in and create their own combinations and sets of answers to existential questions.&lt;br /&gt;Postmodern spirituality includes spiritual practices originating in both existing religions and religious movements, and, to an equal extent, in sources outside of these. Those who practice this modern spirituality hold an active interest in the continued existence of the planet Earth and in the whole universe.&lt;br /&gt;Postmodern spirituality has an individualistic image. It is spiritual in the sense of being the opposite of materialistic, and it is intramundane in contrast to extramundane religiosity; it is essentially about what the world is like and how one should live in it.&lt;br /&gt;The notion fits within the concept of world view in that it is less of a group phenomenon and more of an individual phenomenon. Postmodern spirituality is flexible and personal. In the same ways as people have sought authenticity and a meaning in life through, for example, the theosophy of Helena Petrovna Blavatsky, they do within modern spirituality – but here without the supremacy of a religion or religious movement in issues of faith. There is even distrust within modern spirituality towards the definite perceptions and dogmas of religions and religious movements.&lt;br /&gt;Postmodern spirituality can be expressed in many new and unconventional forms, such as&lt;br /&gt;    art&lt;br /&gt;    music&lt;br /&gt;    sports&lt;br /&gt;Mainly however, postmodern spirituality is found in more conventional spiritual contexts, as in the one offered by the New Age movement.  An example of this is the increasing interest in various forms of Buddhist meditation, particularly in the one called mindfulness.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Application:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Please send your application to give a paper, with a short abstract included, to the &lt;a href="file:///W:/instut/di/Congress2007/kontakt.htm"&gt;Donner institute&lt;/a&gt; as soon as possible, but no later than February 15 2008.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;30 minutes will be reserved for your lecture followed by 15 minutes for discussion.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Finally, we would like to inform you that the lectures will be published, in English, French or German, in volume 21 of the Donner Institute series Scripta Instituti Donneriani Aboensis. The published version of your lecture may be longer than the one you present at the congress. Att religiösa föreställningar och myter har en stor betydelse inom populärkulturen är sedan länge välkänt. Men ockulta och andliga föreställningar översvämmar dagens populärkultur och återfinns i så vitt skilda genrer som teater, dataspel, film, tv-serier, skönlitteratur, musik, serieteckningar etc. Här märks ett inflytande inte bara av traditionella religiösa föreställningar utan även starka inslag av det nyreligiösa.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Men kopplingen mellan nyreligiositet och populärkultur sträcker sig dock djupare än så och här sker ständigt påverkan och inflytande åt olika håll. Syftet med konferensen är därför att presentera aktuell forskning rörande nyreligiositet och populärkultur. Forskare och doktorander från alla akademiska discipliner, som berör det nyreligiösa forskningsfältet, är varmt välkomna.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Anmälan sker via e-post till: &lt;a href="mailto:info@finyar.se"&gt;info@finyar.se&lt;/a&gt;.
